FFP (Frustration-Free Packaging)
FFP (Frustration-Free Packaging) is Amazon's Tier 1 packaging certification, the highest of its three tiers, confirming that a vendor's retail packaging is fully recyclable, easy to open, and free of excess protective material.
FFP (Frustration-Free Packaging) is Amazon’s Tier 1 packaging certification, the highest of its three tiers, confirming that a vendor’s retail packaging is fully recyclable, easy to open, and free of excess protective material.
What it is
Amazon certifies packaging in three tiers: Tier 3 is Prep Free, Tier 2 is SIOC (Ships in Own Container), and Tier 1 is FFP. The tiers are cumulative, so FFP packaging has to meet every Tier 2 and Tier 3 standard as well as its own.
On top of the SIOC and Prep Free standards, FFP adds these requirements:
- The packaging is made of 100% curbside-recyclable materials.
- It opens easily, with minimal use of scissors or a box cutter.
- It contains no blister packs, plastic inserts, packaging peanuts, shredded paper, or welded clam shells.
- The customer can remove the contents from the package within 120 seconds.
Passing SIOC doesn’t qualify an item for FFP on its own, because a single prohibited element, such as a plastic insert or a welded clam shell, fails the FFP standard however well the rest of the package complies.
Where it lives in Vendor Central
FFP belongs to the same Amazon packaging certification program as SIOC and Prep Free, and vendors certify it through Vendor Central. Seller Central has its own separate enrollment path for the parallel FBA program, and most of what ranks for this term is written for FBA sellers without saying so. Before you act on a process description, testing cost, or fee figure you found elsewhere, check that it was written for Vendor Central.
Why it matters to a vendor
Amazon lists the program’s vendor benefits as fewer or no prep chargebacks and the removal of “Ships in Product Packaging” chargebacks, along with potential savings on packaging cost and inbound transportation. It also names brand equity as an upside of certified packaging.
For most vendors the chargebacks are what make this worth tracking. Packaging that misses Amazon’s expectations for an ASIN is a deduction risk on your account, and the Chargebacks entry below covers where those deductions show up. When an FFP item starts drawing packaging charges, audit the lower tiers first: FFP sits on top of SIOC, so an item that loses SIOC compliance can’t hold FFP either.
