Variation Error (Broken Variation)

A variation error, or broken variation, is an Amazon parent-child listing whose relationship has failed, so the child ASINs that should sit under one parent ASIN are split apart, missing from the family, or grouped with the wrong products on the detail page.

A variation error, or broken variation, is an Amazon parent-child listing whose relationship has failed, so the child ASINs that should sit under one parent ASIN are split apart, missing from the family, or grouped with the wrong products on the detail page.

What it is

A variation family is a parent ASIN tying together child ASINs that are identical except for one distinguishing feature, such as size or color. The parent is a non-buyable grouping ASIN with no price, inventory, or Buy Box of its own, because each child carries those. On Vendor Central, Amazon builds these families automatically from your catalog data, and they often need correcting.

A family usually breaks for one of three reasons:

  • The wrong variation theme was applied, or two themes were mixed in one family.
  • A child is missing an attribute, or carries a duplicated or incorrect one.
  • A parent was labeled as a child, or the reverse.

When that happens, you’ll see a child standing alone on its own detail page, a size or color missing from the selector, or an unrelated product sitting among the siblings.

Where it lives in Vendor Central

Amazon doesn’t surface a broken variation anywhere in Vendor Central. There’s no self-service variation feature and no error code to look up, so the first sign is usually the live detail page.

If you came from Seller Central, the Variation Wizard and feed errors such as 8016 have no Vendor Central equivalent. Here a broken family gets fixed through Vendor Support:

  1. Go to Support, then Resource Center, and download the Variation Sheet, an Excel template with examples of valid variation values.
  2. Fill in the template for the family you want grouped.
  3. Open a case under Contact Us, then Manage My Catalog, then Variation – Twister, attach the sheet, and ask Vendor Support to create the parentage from it.

Vendor Support responds within 24 hours. Amazon’s help pages for this sit behind the login, so check the menu labels against your own account.

Why it matters to a vendor

Grouping builds a larger, more complete detail page, which has a better chance of ranking in search. A child split out of its family loses that advantage, while a wrongly merged family puts an unrelated product in front of shoppers who came for a sibling.

Because Vendor Central flags neither case, a break runs until someone opens the page, and the repair then waits on a support case. InsightLeap’s Broken Variations alert sends a daily email notification when a variation breaks, so you can file the case the day the family splits.
