What it is

Three allowances account for most of that figure. The marketing or co-op allowance funds Amazon’s merchandising support. The freight allowance covers your share of moving inbound shipments, and the damage allowance handles damaged and defective units at a set rate instead of one claim at a time. Advertising and promotional spend stays outside the Contra-COGS number.

Contra-COGS is the reporting label for those deductions. The agreement that creates them gets negotiated separately, lives on a different Vendor Central page, and carries its own line types and dispute path, all of which the Co-op (Cooperative Marketing Agreement) entry covers.

Where it lives in Vendor Central

Contra-COGS surfaces in Retail Analytics, in the Sales report under the Sourcing view, which is a different screen from the co-op agreement and its deductions under Payments, then CoOp.

The number Retail Analytics shows is Amazon’s estimate of your allowances, modeled instead of assembled from the co-op, freight, and damage deductions that actually came off your remittances, so it will not agree with what Dispute Management holds for any specific charge.

Why it matters to a vendor

Contra-COGS is a term inside Net PPM, Amazon’s own product margin metric: shipped revenue, less sales discounts, less Shipped COGS, with Contra-COGS added back. That is why the margin a vendor manager quotes from Amazon’s tooling rarely matches the math you build from your own cost figures, and part of that gap is the modeled Contra-COGS figure itself.

The Retail Analytics number is fine for direction, but when an allowance total has to be right, for a margin review or a dispute, pull the deduction detail under Payments, then CoOp, and work from what actually came off the payment.
